Memorial Day Remembered:

File:Graves at Arlington on Memorial Day.JPG

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 30 in 2011). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. Service Members who died while in the military service.[1]

First enacted by formerly enslaved African-Americans [2] to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War – it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.  Memorial Day often marks the start of the summer vacation season, and Labor Day its end.

Begun as a ritual of remembrance and reconciliation after the Civil War, by the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as ordinary people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not. It also became a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family get-togethers, fireworks, trips to the beach, and national media events such as the Indianapolis 500 auto race, held since 1911 on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.[3]

Julianna - Fashion Designer and rescue dog magnet:

Julianna is a contributor to KD as she contracts her expertise in fashion design to our clients.

In Missouri the tornado's ruined so many homes and killed hundreds.

This was a story Julianna brought to me that I wanted to share:

People forget how many animals were affected by the storms. I hope they found their homes & families again.

go hug your critters!!  :-)

Dog with two broken legs finds owner after storm - Yahoo! News

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110526/us_yblog_thelookout/dog-with-two-broken-legs-finds-owner-after-storm

Then- Julianna shared this about her dog and her mission with rescue dogs:

My dog's name is Sugar, she is a rescue doggy from a Border Collie rescue group. Her entire litter of pups was dumped by a breeder because they were not "perfectly marked"! Can you believe people do things like that?? Just glad that there are great people with big hearts that save the animals...I couldn't be any luckier than to have my sweet & super smart Sugar girl. I have only had rescue dogs & cats all my life, somehow they seem to find me!

hey, would you mind mentioning a great website that gives all money to animal charities?
All people have to do is click on the site's donation button or on the sponsor links & they will feed animals in shelters across the US.  Pretty cool...& they have super cute merchandise for animal lovers too.   All for charity!!  :-)

I love people that stand up for animals.

End of an Era...

Today, Oprah ends her talk show.  Sniff. Sniff.

Every ending brings with it a brand-new beginning.”  — Oprah

Now, maybe I will get to see some of her shows if they re-run at convenient times.
As fond as I was of watching Oprah, it rarely happened.

Rhonda meets Talia - this is when it feels like it's a "small world".

Back in June 2010, Rhonda and Talia met.
This is very cool in my "Kim Designs book of remarkable events".

Rhonda and Talia are both contributoring designers to Kim Designs.

Talia resides in Israel where she works full-time at being a designer.
Rhonda is a professor in the USA.

Rhonda was invited to speak in Israel.

I mentioned this to Talia via email and Talia made the effort to go hear Rhonda speak.

I thoroughly enjoyed this photo that came my way when Rhonda returned:

Gratitude Campaign - Worth Passing On

Happy Saturday Everyone,

Everynight at our home, we pray for the soldiers that are serving in our military.  It's a hardship that seems would be so heavy for any family or person serving to bear.  My cousin has served in Iraq and Afghanistan and I have friends too.  Their stories are not too cheery of what it is like to serve.

I liked this link - take a moment if you have 15 seconds:

Flowers in full bloom.

Hope you and yours have a great day.

We are excited about that.

Thursday - Relax - Friday is almost here!

(note: excerpt from Oprah.com)
Take time to meditate.
Illustration by: Tinou Le Joly Senoville

For years the research results have been pouring in: Anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, and heart disease respond to meditation. The latest study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows that a practice that incorporates mindfulness meditation can boost attentiveness and improve mood while lowering stress in less than a week. After just five days of 20-minute sessions, students who meditated outscored their peers (who were practicing a form of guided relaxation) on tests of attention—and reported feeling less angry, anxious, and depressed. Plus, when put in a grueling academic testing situation, the newly minted meditators kept their cool while the others watched their stress levels soar.

"Relaxation is good, but it doesn't provide the physiological changes you see in mindfulness practice," says Daniel J. Siegel, MD, associate clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and author of The Mindful Brain. Even better, says Siegel, there's no need to log hours on the meditation cushion. "The brain responds to repetition with more gusto than it does to duration," he says. His advice is to meditate for three minutes a day. "Just as people practice daily dental hygiene by brushing their teeth, mindfulness meditation is a form of brain hygiene—it cleans out and strengthens the synaptic connections in the brain."

You can give meditation a try by following the instructions below; for more suggestions, download guided meditations from UCLA's Mindful Awareness Research Center website (www.marc.ucla.edu; click on Mindful Meditations) or visit the Web site of the University of Massachusetts Medical School's Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society (www.umassmed.edu/cfm/) and click on Other MBSR Programs Worldwide to find a training program near you.

  1. In a quiet room, stand, sit upright, or lie on cushioned surface.
  2. Close your eyes and, for a minute or so, notice what's happening in your body. Do you feel any heaviness? Register any movements you might be making.
  3. Breathe slowly and deeply for another minute. As you exhale, remember that you're not trying to change or do anything. Don't worry about the various thoughts drifting through your mind.
  4. Listen to the sounds around you. Rather than trying to identify each one, just listen. Notice the silences between each sound. Again, take notice of how your body feels, and then slowly open your eyes.

Sunday - Blessed Sunday

I thought these sayings had some meaningful thoughts...

1] Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble; it is a "steering wheel" that directs us in the right path throughout life.

2] Do you know why a car's WINDSHIELD is so large & the rear view mirror is so small? Because our PAST is not as important as our FUTURE. So, look ahead and move on.

3] Friendship is like a BOOK. It takes few seconds to burn, but it takes years to write.

4] All
th
ings in life are temporary.  If going well enjoy it, they will not last forever. If going wrong don’t worry, they can't last long either.

5] Old friends are like Gold! New friends are Diamonds! If you get a Diamond, don't forget the Gold! Because to hold a Diamond, you always need a base of Gold!

6]  Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says, "Relax, it's just a bend, not the end!

7] When GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities; when GOD doesn't solve your problems HE has faith in your abilities.

8] A blind
person asked St. Anthony: "Can there be anything  worse than losing eye sight?" He replied: "Yes, losing your vision."

9] When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them; and sometimes, when you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you.

10] WORRYING does not take away tomorrow's TROUBLES; it takes away today’s PEACE.
