Hi Kim,
You may or may not have seen this blog before but it's a
great inspiration to me when creating color ways on my prints and it's 1 of my
go to tools I thought I'd share. I love that it's not just thumbnails of the
colors but the photo or print/art that helps tell the color story they are good
at updating w/ the seasons and trends- feel free to share on your blog if it's
new to you and share with the other designers:)
Have a great day!
Joanne

Inspiration - Love these florals.
This is a spotlight on these florals (not the article). The flowers are so pretty with their watercolor look.
Almost looks like a vintage painting with the uneven look.

From a buyer's perspective - buying art:
I was talking with one KD contributing designer that previously purchased art for her job. We were discussing how competitive this industry is. (I know many of you get frustrated with lack of sales so I thought I'd share this).
J writes:
Hi Kim,
Yes, I know. When I was
working in the industry,
we must have looked at a
thousand designs a day
for as long as the Europeans
were in town -- a week
perhaps. And then we
only bought a handful, if that
much! Our boss said we had to
"love, love it!" If it
was only "love" that
wasn't good enough.
Lots of Good Luck,
J

BAnne shares this on creating color themes:
I also learned something yesterday in class that I think
would be helpful for the other designers, if they don't already know about
it.
It is a website to help generate color themes.

“An overview of the print shows”
Hi Kim,
I have walked the Surtex show, which anyone in the industry
can do for a fee. The price has gone up in recent years and I think it was
around $150 last year! It is an interesting show in that part of of the
exhibitors are selling prints and the other half are trying to get licensing
deals. Also, the Stationery show runs right next to it, and you can walk both
shows.
I do know that 2 other shows that are more for just selling
prints are Printsource and Indigo. They happen more than once a year, I think.
I don't know if the prices for exhibitors are comparable, but I do know that the
apparel design teams that I've worked with both full-time and freelance, do
shop those shows. I'm pretty sure anyone in the industry can also register and
attend those shows as well. I don't think you necessarily have to be a buyer,
but I'm not completely sure.
I really only became aware of Surtex when I started trying
to sell original designs (in addition to freelance) and learned about
licensing, even though it has been around a long time as well.
Off to pack for the week! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Elizabeth
